No sooner had his last book of poems, Cathures (Carcanet/Mariscat), been published than Edwin Morgan was at his desk working on a new collection. Love and a Life was composed between September and November 2002, the poet writing nearly every day, as he says, 'with considerable excitement'. The series of fifty poems not only looks back over his life, celebrating love in its many guises, but faces present illness and the future unflinchingly.
The poems are linked throughout, whether thematically or biographically - crocodiles and a dinosaur's egg pop up from time to time, past lovers and various saints come and go, and even the scaffolding round the poet's flat plays its part. The poems are written in the stanza form Edwin Morgan invented for this 'Cathurian Lyrics' in Cathures: he felt its mixture of rigour and freedom would suit the new sequence.
